Form Follows Function & Function Follows Form

What is the meaning between these 2 phrase, 'Form Follows Function' and 'Function Follows Form' ?

First of all, form is the elements that make up our designs, our pages while function is the objective of the design whether it is a sign giving directions or a book that entertains with a story. Form is both the overall look and feel of the page as well as the shape and look of the individual components. Form is also the format whether the piece is a poster, brochure booklet or a self-mailer newsletter. Function is the practical, getting down to business part of the process of design and desktop publishing. Function is the purpose of the piece whether it is to sell, to inform or educate, to impress, or to entertain.

Form follows function means something is created in a manner which allows it to perform its function. It always starts with the design process by first getting as much information as possible about the purpose of the piece you are creating and the appearance of the architecture clearly and simply expressed the structure, without any unnecessary symbolism or decoration.

On conversely, function follows form is more likely always end up with formalism, satisfied the building’s appearance from outside view, but we don’t know what will be happen inside and the most important function is to design an iconic structure or in a style distinctive to them as to distinguish themselves from other companies.

As a conclusion, form and function will be very important in a project, and since there is no right or wrong in design. I believed that it is really a matter of personal perception and resolving. It is one of the issues that give us more than one solution to design issues. Both are equally important and cannot be neglected for the other's sake.

Creating a creative environment for brainstorming

What is a creative environment?
A creative environment is one where people feel comfortable in expressing their ideas and where constructive support is given in the development and analysis of those ideas.

You are in a creative environment when
- Your ideas are listened to and investigated before being judged.
- You feel appreciated when you suggest new ideas.
- You can suggest solutions to other groups without feeling like you are intruding.
- Your manager spends time with you and explains the reasons and politics behind projects.
- You are given the freedom to do your work in your own way.
- You are not observed or judged all the time.
- You do not have to pass all of your messages through your manager.
- Experimental methods are encouraged.
- You feel comfortable talking with anyone in your organization (top managers included).
- You feel comfortable talking to your subordinates without having to order them about.
- There is someone that will listen to your ideas.
- The generation of good ideas is rewarded, verbally or otherwise.
- You are treated with respect and as someone who can contribute to the organization.
- You are appreciated for what you do.
- You are appreciated for who you are.

How do you start creating this environment?
Of course, you say, this sounds great, but how can I create such an environment? The answer is simple (and nothing new!): do to others what you would like done to yourself. You will find that if you give creative space to other people, they will give you space to be creative back.

- You need to stop criticizing or prejudging other people's ideas and should actually encourage people to share them with you.
- It's your job to help people turn their unformed ideas into reality by giving encouragement and suggestions and by asking helpful questions.
- You must never steal their ideas or pretend they are your own or people will stop sharing their ideas with you.
- You must be bold and ask people for their ideas even if you appear slightly foolish for asking and even if you have a valid suggestion yourself. If you do not use their ideas, explain why not but remember to thank them anyway.
- Seeking opinions builds respect and confidence. It also builds a creative environment.
- "Seek first to understand, then to be understood."

Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention

Novelty is the quality of being new. Although it may be said to have an objective dimension (e.g. a new style of art coming into being, such as abstract art or impressionism) it essentially exists in the subjective perceptions of individuals.

Creativity is the generation of new ideas or a new way of doing things.

Innovation is the process of making improvements by introducing something new, the realization of a creative idea in a social context. Innovation is a process by which an idea or invention is translated into a good or service for which people will pay. To be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need.

Invention is the act of finding out or inventing; contrivance or construction of that which has not before existed; as, the invention of logarithms; the invention of the art of printing.
